Arctic Fun!

Happy New Year! We are so glad to be back at school and back to learning! We were so excited to join back on the carpet for calendar time because Mrs. Conner told us we are in a whole new season!  The season of winter!  Not only was it the season of winter but it was Miley and Mrs. Conner's birthday!  Mrs. Conner told us that January is a month of Arctic fun and learning! Most of us looked at her with a confusing look on our face but Isaac quickly asked, "What is Arctic?"  Little did we know, we were about to learn more about the Arctic than we could have ever imagined! In the first week back, we learned all about the Arctic, Arctic animals, characteristics of winter, migration, hibernation,  how to read vowel-consonant-silent "e" words and contractions, how to write a "How To" list, and worked on math concepts such as: counting by 2's, teen numbers, ten/twenty frames, addition stories, and number bingo with numbers all the way up to 100! BOY did we work hard! Thanks for joining us and taking a peek into our first week back to school!

Literacy Centers:
Listening Centers

Reading to self with finger pointers and camera word finders!

Some of us LOVED choosing science books to read!

We LOVED working on the letter Ll!

Snowman sight words are ALWAYS the best!

We also enjoyed making magnetic words and writing sentences!

Mrs. Conner and Tallent told us that learning vocabulary words will help us read! In this center, we pulled out "real life" pictures of winter vocabulary words and wrote sentences about the picture.

Evergreen tree phonics!

Mrs. Tallent helped us learn the definition of vocabulary words such as: hibernation, migration, dormant, glacier, blubber, Arctic, Antarctica, evergreen, and frost.

Reading books on Raz-Kids and Big Universe is ALWAYS fun!

By lunch everyday, we were STARVING! We really worked up an appetite! We LOVE lunch time!

Mrs. Tallent's favorite thing to do is read stories to us!  This week in shared reading, we read tons of different books about Arctic animals.  She read library books to us, read books on the smart board,  and even showed us video clips on United Streaming! Man, our brains were filled with so many facts about the Arctic!

As an after activity, we added to our Arctic animal vocabulary book! Each day we would pick a different animal and write facts we learned about them.

Matthew researching facts about polar bears from a library book Mrs. Crook gave us!

Writing time is ALWAYS one of our favorites!  This week we started a new unit on How To writing!  We have focused on making a How To list and making sure that our writing is 5 star approved!  On the first day, Mrs. Conner let us sing the song "Peanut Butter and Jelly."  This song helped us see an example of  "how to" steps!

 How to tell a story.

How to make a bowl of cereal.

How to make breakfast.

How to brush my teeth.

How to make a bowl of cereal.

How to make pizza.

How to swing on a swing set.

How to meet the tooth fairy.
How to make a pizza.
Independent Reading:

Working on sight word fluency!

 Math Time:
We LOVE singing math songs! We have been practicing counting by 2's and "Whatcha' Gonna Do?" is our favorite song!

 Math centers:
Twenties frames

Teen number dice roll

Number Bingo: #'s 0-100!

Subtraction and measurement anyone?

This week during STEM time, we learned all about the season of winter!  In our science journals, we illustrated a winter scenery and labeled them with characteristic words.  On the smart board, we graphed the temperatures for each day on the thermostat, and BOY was it a cold week! BURRRR! We also completed an activity where animals go in the winter!

Showing our Panther Pride for the play-offs!

Mrs. Tallent told us that from now til the end of the year, Mrs. Conner and her were going to pick a student of the day for each week!!  We are so happy for our stars of the week for this week and each are striving to see our names on that chart soon!

This week was another GREAT week in kindergarten and we cannot wait to continue our winter studies!  Kindergarten ROCKS!!!
